Power Outage

Krista Pederson

Music can connect people. Here's how it connected my husband and I one night.

We had a fight that morning and things were teetering. You went back to work and I went back to whatever forgettable thing it was that I ended up doing. Later that evening we sat down to watch a show in separate chairs but before it even started, the power went out. Since our street doesn't have streetlights, the darkness was deep. In a few moments, the kids came flickering into the room. They were so excited. They relayed how they felt the moment it went dark. One was in a downstairs bathroom that suddenly turned to black. The other had just lifted their head out of their bath water and opened their eyes to see nothing. Our fireplace was just enough light but we lit some candles anyway and got out some glowsticks and sparklers. Since the TV wasn’t working, you sat down and started playing piano. I sat down beside you and started playing Night Swimming. You sang along. I love hearing you sing that song. I fell asleep happy and close beside you on the couch that night and the power was back on by morning. Amazing how different morning is after swimming or singing together on a dark night.
